Ömnögovi
About this place
Khongoryn Els is a sand-dune landscape in Sevrei soum, Omnogovi Province, within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. Known as the Singing Sands, its high ridges and changing light offer memorable desert scenery. Explore the dunes on foot or arrange a camel experience with local herders.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn can offer milder conditions, but check wind and weather locally. In summer, plan walks outside the midday heat. Winter requires preparation for cold and snow.
Getting there
The modeled road approach from Chinggis Khaan International Airport is about 790 km / 12 h 17 min without stops. Its endpoint is 285 m from the supplied pin in a straight line. Confirm parking and the final walking approach locally; this offset is not a mapped trail.
What to know
Keep vehicles on existing tracks and protect vegetation near the dunes. Ask permission before approaching herders or camels, confirm park entry and accommodation, and take your waste away.
Safety
Carry ample drinking water, sun protection, warm layers and offline maps. Dune climbing is strenuous; turn back before exhaustion. Avoid sandstorms and exposed ridges in strong wind.
Nearby
Sevrei and the surrounding Gobi can be included in a longer trip. Plan separate journeys to Yolyn Am or Bayanzag rather than treating them as nearby walking stops.
